About Struga (town)

Struga is a town in the southwestern region of North Macedonia, situated on the northern shore of Lake Ohrid. It is located approximately 15 kilometers from the larger and more renowned city of Ohrid. The town is primarily known as a cultural and tourist center, distinguished by its unique position at the point where the Black Drin River flows out from the lake. It is internationally notable for hosting the long-standing Struga Poetry Evenings, a major cultural festival.

Basic information

The town's origins trace back to antiquity, with significant development during the medieval period. Key architectural features include traditional Macedonian houses, several historic churches and mosques, and a famous old bridge. The town center and its relationship with the lake and river are its defining structural characteristics. Struga serves as the administrative center of the Struga Municipality and functions as a hub for local commerce, fishing, and a growing tourism industry centered on Lake Ohrid's natural and cultural heritage.

Location

Struga is easily accessible by road. The nearest major international airport is Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport, located roughly 15 kilometers away. The town is connected to the capital, Skopje, by a modern highway, with a travel time of approximately two and a half hours. Regular bus services connect Struga to other major cities in the country and to neighboring Albania. The town itself has a developed tourist infrastructure with hotels, restaurants, and paved paths along the lake and river. There are no significant seasonal limitations for access, though tourist activity peaks during the summer months.

Nature

Struga is characterized by a moderate continental climate influenced by its altitude and proximity to the lake. The landscape is dominated by Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, and the Black Drin River which originates from it. The surrounding area features low mountains and hills. Vegetation includes mixed forests and lakeside flora. The lake is renowned for its unique and endemic aquatic species. The natural environment is well-preserved but shows a high level of human influence due to long-standing settlement and modern development along the shoreline.

Story

The area of Struga has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of Illyrian and later Roman settlement. It was known as Enchalon in antiquity. The town gained prominence during the Middle Ages as a trading and fishing settlement. It was part of the First Bulgarian Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and later the Ottoman Empire for five centuries, which left a significant cultural and architectural imprint. In the modern era, Struga became part of the Kingdom of Serbia and later Yugoslavia before the independence of North Macedonia. Its cultural significance was greatly enhanced with the establishment of the Struga Poetry Evenings festival in 1962.
